Ensuring that students make timely progress through their program and that they continue to meet program requirements is of benefit to students and to the college.  Minimum requirements for good standing in a College of Education undergraduate program include:

1. Maintaining an overall GPA of 2.0
2. Enrolling in required major courses as graded, unless specified pass/no pass by the major.

In addition to the above criteria, the undergraduate programs may require students to meet program-specific requirements after admission.

Evaluation of Student Progress

Quarterly Review

Once a term, a full-time student and her/his adviser will meet to discuss the next term’s coursework and to review the student’s progress.  Specifically, the adviser will review the student’s academic progress.  These evaluation sessions should assist the student in developing plans to meet major and degree requirements. If an adviser feels that the student’s progress is unsatisfactory, the program option coordinator should be notified and a special meeting called.

Inadequate Progress

Students who have not met the retention requirements must develop an agreed upon plan of action and timelines for completion.  This written plan of action should describe the student’s specific weaknesses or problems and recommended corrective action.  This document should be signed by the adviser, the student, the program coordinator, and major director and placed in the student’s file.  The adviser should retain documentation of the student’s progress towards meeting the stipulations and timelines of the action plan.

If the student does not agree with the problems description or the corrective action and has exhausted corrective mechanisms found within his or her program option, he or she may seek mediation or may file a grievance.  The grievance procedure is outlined in the Grievance Procedure section of this handbook.

Review of Conditional Status

Students who are admitted to a program under conditional terms will have their progress monitored by the major director and the program coordinator.  They will receive a letter specifying the conditions that must be met and the timelines for removal of the conditional status.  Once the students have met the conditions, they will receive a letter from the major director notifying them of their change of status.  Failure to meet the conditions may result in termination from the program.
